What is your definition of happiness?  Many of us answer this question by identifying the things that “make” us happy.  A great vacation.  A new love.  Quality family time.  Try listing five things, ten things, twenty things that you believe make you happy.  It’s a fun exercise and it feels great.  That’s because we love thinking about the things that make us happy.  If you imagine the wonderful vacation you are going on next week, you already feel good just thinking about it. Ah, the sleeping late, the pina colada by the pool, that great novel you’ve been dying to read.  It’s going to be great!  We are feeling good because we are anticipating being happy in the future. Depending on our expectations, we can feel completely different about the same event.  For example, how would you feel about that same vacation if you were anticipating getting food poisoning, sunburn…

If you blame no one for your sadness,  you will remember to not accept blame for theirs. If you accuse no one of breaking your laws, you will acquit yourself at their indignance. If you are not disappointed that another has not a greater beauty or virtue, you will never feel insulted when you are judged inadequate by others. If you are not amazed at the ignorance of men, you will always be at peace. + Is happiness the result of having good things?

We all want good things, but the difference between wanting things because we are happy and wanting things in order to be happy makes all the difference in the world to how happy we will be.  When we want things, we happily move toward getting them.  Achieving our goals lets us enjoy our happiness.  When we need things, we are driven to get them.  We are always fearful of not having. Think of this way:  want means “happy if I get or don’t get.”  Need means “happy if I get and unhappy if I don’t get.”  Needing things to be happy makes our happiness conditional on getting things.   Doing that shifts control over our happiness to the events in our lives.  As Bruce Di Marsico said, “If not having money makes you feel bad .. . there’s only one solution: you have to make money.”  Let yourself experience the joy…
